Swiss Chard - Beautiful for the Plate and Body

February 28, 2017 by Callie Wamsley

Swiss Chard.jpgCould Swiss chard be the new kale this year? Only time will tell, but in the meantime there’s no harm in getting to know this leafy green. Swiss chard is big, bold and colorful making it a perfect accompaniment to New Year’s resolutions. It’s not only aesthetically pleasing, but also good for your health. It’s packed with vitamins A, K, C, E, dietary minerals, magnesium, manganese, iron and potassium.

Swiss Chard pic 2.jpgSwiss chard is available year round, but is known to be best from late summer to late fall. Although its size and appearance is comparable to kale, Swiss chard is closer to spinach in terms of taste, packing just a slightly bigger punch. This beautiful vegetable can be eaten raw, giving salads both a slightly sweet and slightly bitter taste if mixed with both the leaves and stems. It can also be eaten cooked! Check out this recipe (pictured above) from The Kitchn for a delicious Trumpet Pasta with Swiss Chard, Sausage & Chanterelles.
