Schools almost out and classic summer weather is heading our way. Looking for a fun and educational way to entertain the family this weekend? Well, you can celebrate Coastal Wetlands Day!
Georgia has more than 100 miles of wetlands – 6.5 miles of that pristine marsh frontage are right here at WaterWays Township. Wetlands are found in coastal watersheds and include salt marshes, bottomland hardwood swamps, fresh marshes, mangrove swamps, and shrubby depressions known in the southeast United States as "pocosins." Coastal wetlands cover about 40 million acres and make up 38 percent of the total wetland acreage in the United States!
Here are a few ways you can explore and enjoy our coastal wetlands this weekend:
- Take a canoe or kayak ride in the Grand Lagoon.
- Bait a hook, and cast a line along RedBird Creek.
- Visit Oatland Island Wildlife Center for free admission to "Coastal Wetlands Day" this Saturday, May 18, 2013 from 10-2 p.m. Visit www.oatlandisland.org for more information.
- Explore the Tybee Island Coastal Georgia Gallery. The gallery features an 800 gallon sea turtle tank and exhibits on coastal Georgia's unique ecosystems. Visit http://tybeemarinescience.org/ for more information.
