Paddle Into Spring

March 21, 2014 by Callie Wamsley

Kayak PavilionIs there a better way to soak in the sun and celebrate the coming of spring than a day on the water? To live life on the coast of South Georgia is truly something special. Residents have the water in their vistas. You'll find them casting a line from the marsh banks or kayaking the inlets. There's never a dull moment at WaterWays Township!

While residents navigate the waters throughout the year, spring and summer are prime seasons for getting the most out of the life on the coast.  We expect 2014 to be the best yet! Kayaking is a wildly popular activity for our residents. It's the perfect way for both children and adults to get some exercise while enjoying our beautiful lagoons. Since kayaking is a staple at WaterWays, we are adding a kayak launch and boathouse.

The boathouse will be a rustic structure nestled along the edge of Grand Lagoon at Hawk Island Park and beneath the moss-draped branches of our majestic ancient oaks. This handsome facility will provide:

  • Covered and secured storage for up to 36 single and double passenger kayaks and canoes
  • A sun deck to provide a space to relax and enjoy the beauty of the water and the natural preserve setting of Hawk Island.
  • Two launching berths provide comfortable access to the water and easy retrieval after the day's paddling is complete.
  • A solar-powered facility, consistent with our philosophy of conservation and sustainability.

Construction begins in April with opening ceremonies scheduled for early summer, 2014.
