January 23, 2014 by Callie Wamsley

heatingbillHGTVWinter has officially made her way to the Richmond Hill! After this week's winter storm we all know that as South Georgians, we are not cut out for the cold. When the temperatures outside drop, we crank our thermostats up and our heating bills reflect it.

HGTV and DIY Network have some tips to help you keep your house warm and your energy bill low. Not only will you save money, but you will save energy and keep your family warm!

  • Buy a programmable thermostat: Did you know that with every degree you lower your thermostat your energy bill is cut by 3%? You're missing out on a lot of savings if you forget to turn it down when you leave the house! Fortunately, you can purchase a programmable thermostat that will take care of this problem for you. They are also affordable! Try the Honeywell 7-Day programmable touchscreen thermostat for $90 (wifithermostat.com)!
  • Install door sweeps: "Don't forget to add sweeps to your exterior doors – they can help you save as much as 5% of your heating bill," says John DeSilvia of Rescue My Renovation
  • Change your filters: Replace or clean your furnace filters four times a year to help the furnace run at peak efficiency.
  • Retire your boiler: If your boiler is more than 20 years old, it's probably time to invest in a new one," says John DeSilvia. "A high-efficiency model could save you 40% a year on your energy bill."
  • Keep Open Air Flow: Keep obstructions such as rugs and furniture, away from heating vents. This will help promote better heat flow throughout the house.
