July 4th Safety Tips

July 03, 2013 by Callie Wamsley

Each year July 4th is celebrated with back yard barbecues, patriotic parades and fireworks. All fun ways to celebrate the birth of our country with friends and family, it is important to remember and recognize the dangers that may be lurking around the corner.

We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable July 4th so we have put together a list of safety tips and reminders that will help prevent any mishap or accident from taking a toll on your family this holiday weekend.

  1. Grill Master: Make sure to have a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water on hand, in case the fire on the grill gets out of control; designating one person as the grill master, to be in charge of monitoring the grill is always a good idea.
  2. Good Eats: Did you know you are more likely to get food poisoning than you are the flu? Keep all of the food you are planning to serve covered and cool before it hits the grill and you will lower any chance of unwanted bacteria.
  3. A Pet's Retreat: Â Dogs and cats are sensitive to loud noises as they can be painful to their ears. Give your pet a quiet cool place to retreat inside where the sounds are less intense.
  4. SPF: Make sure to wear plenty of sunscreen if you plan on spending the day outdoors. Even high SPF sunscreen should be reapplied every couple of hours. Â Wearing a hat and light clothing will also help to keep you cool in the South Georgia heat.
  5. Fireworks: If you are planning to shoot off a few of your own fireworks, only light one at a time and keep out of the reach of young children. Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not fully functioned.
  6. H2O: Drink lots of water throughout the day and into the evening to stay hydrated.

This weekend make sure to wave your American flags with pride and strut your stuff in red, white and blue. Share your photos with us on Facebook!
