Coastal Canines

June 13, 2014 by Callie Wamsley

Living on the Georgia coast is a lifestyle worth sharing. At WaterWays Township, our residents are busy throughout the spring and summer entertaining friends and family looking to get a taste of the salty coastal air under the warm Georgia sun. Getting out on the open water to bask in Mother Nature's nautical beauty is a privilege that we feel everyone deserves to experience firsthand, even our canine friends.Dog on the water

Show your dog a world they've never imagined with a day on the boat. Before you board, check out some of these tips that will make a perfect day on the water perfect for your best friend, too.

  • Learn the rules

o  Wherever you plan on going while you're out on the water, make sure that your dog is welcome. You don't want to have to leave your dog on a hot boat while you get to have all the fun!

  • Bring a first-aid kit for your dog

o  You never know what could happen while you're out on the water. Leave dry land prepared with antibiotic ointments and bandages just in case your dog needs it.

  • Get your dog a life jacket

o  Your dog may be a great swimmer, but it's tough to keep the doggie-paddling going for long periods of time. Fitting your dog with a life jacket is a great way to keep your dog safe while out on the water. Visit here for great options to help keep your dog afloat!

  • Bring food and eating surfaces that your dog can use while on the boat

o  Make sure that you bring plenty of food and water for your dog, but keep in mind that your dog still needs something that it can eat out of. Your dog won't be used to eating on the water, so anything that is stable will help them be more comfortable.

If you take Fido out on the lagoons of WaterWays Township, share your adventures on our Facebook page.
