Running and walking are great cardio exercises for staying in shape. If you have decided to compete in the inaugural Resolution Runz at WaterWays Township, you have chosen a great fitness goal to start your year off right. The most important thing to before the race is to prepare correctly. Whether you've set a particular goal, or simply want to have a morning of fun, proper preparation will help you avoid injuries and finish like a pro.
Here are five tips for that will help you get the most out of the race tomorrow:
1. Dress appropriately. What you wear on race day can make or break your winter run. Make sure to dress in layers so that you can stay warm before the race, but also avoid being too warm and uncomfortable as you run. Â Wearing gear made of materials such as polypropylene, capilene, and some wool/synthetic blends will also help keep you as warm and dry as possible.
2. Eat the Breakfast of Champions: On race morning, be sure eat a couple of hours prior to the race. Eat something that is high energy and easily digestible like a bowl of oatmeal with dried fruit, a sports bar, or a bagel with peanut butter.
3. The Early Bird Gets the Worm: Race morning can be stressful if you don't allow yourself plenty of time. Make sure you plan time for parking, packet pick-up, waiting in line for the bathroom and warming up. A good rule of thumb is to arrive at the race site 60 minutes prior to the start.
4. Good Ole H20: Be sure to drink about 20 oz. of water about two hours prior to running the race. This will give it time to pass through your system and be voided before your run. Being well hydrated is your best defense against cramps and that can cause muscle strains or pull.
5. Just Breathe: Avoid race day jitters by letting go of any worries or doubts. You've done the training and you will reach the finish line! Before you start, take three deep breathes and give yourself a pep talk. Having a positive mantra for the race—such as "I can do it" or "Fast feet to the finish line"—is a great way to power through and enjoy the race.
We are looking forward to seeing all of the runners participating in the Resolution Runz tomorrow at WaterWays Township. We hope you will enjoy running though our community!! Good luck everyone!
